Tragic Loss of Wyatt Eaves-Nibert in Mason County Shooting

A heart-wrenching tragedy has struck in West Virginia as 10-year-old Wyatt Eaves-Nibert was found dead after going missing while hunting with his grandfather on a fateful Saturday. Wyatt had reportedly wandered away from his grandfather’s side to look for squirrels and tragically, he never returned. A massive search operation was launched in Salt Creek in Mason County near Gallipolis Ferry.

Sadly, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the discovery of Wyatt’s lifeless body early Sunday morning, with an apparent gunshot wound as the cause of death, as reported by WSAZ. His family is now mourning the loss of a young life that, according to his mother, Adrienne Nibert, was “too kind for this world.”

On the day he disappeared, Wyatt was dressed in camouflage and had a .22 caliber rifle with him. He and his grandfather had paused to have lunch when he decided to go for a walk. When his grandfather called out to him, there was no response, as recounted by Wyatt’s mother, Adrienne Nibert, to WCHS.

Nibert explained, “They were eating lunch together, he told grandpa he was going to walk around the road a little bit, the path to see if he could see any squirrels.”

His grandfather immediately began searching for him, but during the search, he was involved in an ATV accident, leading to a call for assistance to the sheriff’s office. Deputies responded, and the man informed them he was searching for Wyatt, as reported by People. Volunteers, deputies, and West Virginia State Police joined the search effort, leading to the tragic discovery of Wyatt’s lifeless body at around 7 a.m. Sunday, the victim of an apparent gunshot wound.

Wyatt’s mother, Nibert, emphasized that her son was well-trained in gun safety, stating, “Wyatt was very trained on gun safety. He knew not to walk around without the safety off and he knew to carry the gun on his back with it pointed in the air. He had very good trigger discipline.”

Nibert also shared that Wyatt and his grandfather were inseparable best friends who cherished their time together.

In the midst of their grief, Nibert’s fiancé, Jason Krebs, shared screenshots of messages allegedly sent to the grieving mother by a woman named Dari Schmall. These messages seemed to cast blame on the family and criticized their hunting practices. Nibert responded with a heartfelt message, asking Schmall to respect their privacy and grief.

Schmall’s public Facebook posts advocate for the compassionate treatment of animals.
